We Never AI the Dress

Quick answer

EASTEAM uses AI-generated imagery for some backgrounds and locations in our marketing. We do not use it for the garment, and we do not use it for ideas. The dress, the skirt, the boning, the stitching, the drape, the fit on a real body: always photographed, never generated. Every concept, mood board, styling decision and creative direction: always ours. Our standing rule is we never AI the dress. Below is the full standard — what is always real, what is always ours, what may be generated, and how to tell. Nobody requires us to publish this. We would rather you know than wonder.

The comment

Somebody leaves this comment under our posts roughly once a day, so let us just put it on a page with our name on it. It usually reads some version of: 'this is AI, why should I trust anything about this brand.'

Fair. Genuinely. Here is what we would want to know if we were you: which part was AI? Because 'this brand generated a background' and 'this brand is lying to me about what I am buying' are completely different accusations, and only one of them would actually matter. So we drew the line, wrote it down, and made it public.

The line

We never AI the dress. Every garment you see from EASTEAM is a real garment, photographed. Not rendered. Not generated. Not 'based on' a sample. The seams are the actual seams. The titanium boning sits where the titanium boning actually sits. The way the hip contouring shapes a silhouette is the way it shapes a silhouette, because it was on a real body and a camera was pointed at it.

What we sometimes generate is the place. The rooftop at golden hour. The corridor of a hotel none of us has stayed in. The exact shade of blue behind a shoulder. And what we never outsource is the idea — the concept, the mood board, the styling, the reason a piece is shot the way it is shot is a person on our team deciding something. AI is not art-directing us; it is rendering a backdrop we already described.

A mood board draws the thing that doesn't exist yet. The difference between that and a lie is whether the product is real. Ours is.

EASTEAM — How we make things

The standard, in full

Three buckets. This is the whole thing.

Always a real photograph — no exceptions

  • The garment: cut, seams, titanium boning, hip contouring, busk, drape, hardware, fabric surface.
  • Fit on a body: how it sits, where the hem lands, how it moves.
  • The actual colour of the actual product.
  • Reviews, ratings, comments and testimonials.
  • Our own first-party data and original research.

Always our own original thinking — never outsourced to a machine

  • Concepts and creative direction.
  • Mood boards, references and inspiration.
  • Styling and scene ideas.
  • Every design decision in the garment itself.

May be AI-generated — and this is the part we are disclosing

  • Backgrounds and locations.
  • Lighting and atmosphere layered onto a real photographed garment.

Rule one: no generated bodies, no generated fit. We do not use AI to change a body — not narrower, not wider, not smoother, not longer-legged. If the hem lands mid-calf in the photograph, it lands mid-calf.

Rule two: real garment, real camera, every time. Any image where the product is the point starts with a photograph of the product. AI can put that photograph somewhere prettier. It cannot invent it.

Now the part nobody asks about: we are not in the same room

EASTEAM is a fully remote, fully international team, spread across countries and time zones. Design, patterning, production, creative, copy and ops sit in different places on the map, and most of us have never been in a room together. That is not a pandemic leftover — it is how the company was built, and it is the reason the clothes look the way they do. You do not get Eastern-heritage construction inside Western ready-to-wear from a team that all grew up on one continent.

But it has a consequence for photography. A traditional campaign shoot needs a critical mass of people, garments and a location, all in one city, on one day — which for us means international flights, sample shipping through customs, and schedules reconciled across many time zones, before anyone has paid a photographer. Per look. Per drop. Several drops a year.

We do photograph the garments — real people, real cameras, real clothes; that part is non-negotiable. What is genuinely out of reach at our scale is flying a full crew to a rooftop in another country so the dress can stand in front of a nicer wall. The honest choice was never 'AI images versus beautiful campaign images.' It was AI settings versus no settings — a flat product shot against a plain wall that tells you nothing about how a piece lives in a room.

Where the money went instead

We would rather put it in the garment, and you can see exactly where. Titanium-alloy fishbone boning instead of plastic, which warps with body heat and takes a permanent bend within a season. Integrated hip contouring, shaped and positioned and graded across every size. A real busk at centre front, engineered to hold under tension so you can fasten it yourself. Full lining, bodice and skirt.

None of that is visible in a photograph. All of it is obvious within ten minutes of putting the dress on. That is the trade we made, deliberately: spend on the things a camera cannot show you, and be honest about how we made the pictures.

The part that is not our opinion

We can say whatever we like about our own garments. So here is what people who paid for them said instead.

CONFIRM — real customer review, copied verbatim, with first name and rating
CONFIRM — real customer review, verbatim
CONFIRM — real comment from Instagram or TikTok, ideally one that arrived after somebody called the post AI

Any AI image can make a garment look good. Only a real garment can survive arriving at somebody's door.

EASTEAM

Why publish this at all

Because the disclosure conversation is coming for everyone, and we would rather be early than compliant. There is already law on this elsewhere: Israel has required advertisers to label digitally altered images since 2012; France's 'photographie retouchée' rule took effect in October 2017, requiring commercial images to be labelled where a model's silhouette has been digitally narrowed or widened; and Norway amended its Marketing Act in 2021 to require labelling of retouched body features in advertising and sponsored posts.

The United States has no equivalent requirement, so this is voluntary. We are doing it anyway — partly because it is obviously the right side of the argument, and partly for a less noble reason we will admit to: a brand that tells you what is generated is a brand you can believe about the parts that are not.

Call us out

Standing invitation, not a rhetorical flourish. If you see an EASTEAM image where you think the garment itself looks generated, reply to the post or email info@easteamny.com and ask. We will tell you exactly what the image is, and if we got something wrong we will take it down and say so. If you would rather see the unglamorous version, our reviews and customer photos are on every product page, shot in real bedrooms with real lighting — and frequently more persuasive than anything we have made ourselves.

Frequently asked questions

Does EASTEAM use AI-generated images?

Yes, for some backgrounds and locations in marketing imagery, and for lighting atmosphere layered onto a real photograph. EASTEAM does not use AI for the garment itself, and does not use it to generate concepts, mood boards or styling ideas. Every product is a real garment photographed with a camera, and the cut, seams, boning, drape, colour and fit on a body are never generated.

Are EASTEAM products real, or AI-generated?

The products are real, physically manufactured garments. EASTEAM’s published standard is that the garment, its construction, its colour and its fit on a body are always photographed and never AI-generated. AI is used only for settings and atmosphere around a real photographed product.

Does EASTEAM use AI to design its clothes or create its concepts?

No. All design decisions, concepts, mood boards, references and styling ideas are created by EASTEAM’s own team. AI is used to render backgrounds and locations the team has already conceived, not to generate ideas or direct the creative.

Does EASTEAM use AI to alter models’ bodies?

No. EASTEAM’s disclosure standard prohibits using AI or retouching to change a body’s shape or size — no narrowing, widening, smoothing or lengthening — and prohibits generated fit. How a garment sits on a body is always photographed as it actually sat.

Why does EASTEAM use AI in its marketing?

EASTEAM is a fully remote, international team spread across countries and time zones, so assembling a full crew, the garments and a location in one city means international travel, sample shipping and cross-time-zone scheduling for every look of every drop. At our scale the realistic alternative was not a larger campaign shoot, it was flat product photographs against a plain wall. We photograph every garment for real and use AI for the settings around it, and put the budget into construction instead.

How can I tell which parts of an EASTEAM image are AI?

The garment is always real and the idea is always ours. The setting may be generated. EASTEAM publishes a full disclosure standard listing exactly which elements are always photographed, which are always the team’s own original work, and which may be AI-generated, and invites customers to email info@easteamny.com to ask about any specific image.

Is it legal to use AI-generated images in fashion advertising?

In the United States there is currently no law requiring disclosure of AI-generated or retouched advertising imagery, though deceptive advertising rules still apply. Several other countries do require labelling of digitally altered body imagery, including Israel since 2012, France since October 2017, and Norway following a 2021 amendment to its Marketing Act. EASTEAM publishes its disclosure standard voluntarily.

Made for you. Made to love you.

EASTEAM is a New York occasionwear label built on internal structure — titanium-alloy fishbone boning, integrated hip contouring and corset construction sewn into the garment, so the piece does the shaping instead of a layer underneath it. Founded in New York by a fully remote, international team from backgrounds outside fashion, EASTEAM designs Eastern-heritage detail into Western ready-to-wear.
